Week 16 update from our farmer

Posted 9/22/2020 3:17pm by Jeff Schrimmer.

Hi from Downtown Harvest CSA!

The next weekly Pickup of the 2020 season will be this Wednesday, September 23rd from 5:15pm to 8:00pm at 180 Sussex St. All food that is not picked up by members will be picked up by the Our Lady of Sorrows Food Pantry at 8pm.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped at the pickup site and behind the scenes. We could not do this without you. We need a volunteer for the shift 5pm-6.30pmOur volunteers this week will be Teresa P. (5pm to 6.30pm) and Maris M. and Brittany K. (6:30pm to 8pm)

Full shares are now being delivered in boxes that cannot leave the pickup site.  Please bring your own bags so you can transfer the contents to them. If you have borrowed a reusable bag from us, we ask that you return it.  If you have received items in plastic containers, please return the containers.  Egg share members should also return their cartons.

Remember that face coverings are mandatory when picking up as well as maintaining a 6 foot distance from others if they are not in your household. Only one member of your household will be allowed to enter the garage. Regulations from the Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services can be viewed here: http://www.downtownharvest.org/blog/39286

We are still accepting new members for produce at prorated fees, but John has asked us not to take any new orders for eggs for the time being.

Sincerely,

Maria, Phil, Katia, Nancy, Jeff, and Pamela

And, here is an update from our farmer, John Krueger:

Hi Folks,

So the weather has turned on us again- it has been nearly 2 weeks with no rain and another week to go before any precipitation is predicted. Worse than that we have had frost on a few consecutive nights. The predictions have been for 37-38 degrees and there were no frost warnings. We covered some of the more delicate crops on the first night and then, once we saw the effects, started covering as much as we could. These have been very light frosts but enough to damage the beans, peppers, and squash etc. The eggplants were loaded with small fruit which we were hoping to put in the shares one last time during the next several weeks. I spoke with an eighty year old man this past Saturday who told me he has lived in the area all his life and has never seen frost in September. It simply irrational weather- today is the last day of summer but it feels like winter has already begun! Most of what we have left in the fields is cold hardy so the shares will not be greatly affected.

The share for this week will be: Butternut squash, Napa (Chinese) cabbage, lettuce, radishes, kale, arugula or tatsoi, scallions, spinach or Swiss chard, red fingerling potatoes, and cilantro or dill.

Enjoy!
Farmer John
